Hearing Clinic at Mirabella
July 28, 2022
Did you know that hearing loss is one of the only preventable risk factors contributing to dementia in older adults?
We learned this and other remarkable insights from one of our weekly Lifelong Learning lectures given by Dr. Kristy Samuelson, Director of the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. She explained that hearing loss can force the brain to work harder at the expense of other thinking and memory systems. Hearing loss also leads people to be less socially engaged with friends and family which is an important part of remaining intellectually active and have quality of life.
Lucky for the residents of Mirabella at ASU, Dr. Samuelson’s Speech and Hearing Clinic is just across the street from Mirabella and she was delighted to set up an on-site clinic for Mirabella residents to get a hearing check and get valuable insights about their hearing while helping students to earn supervised clinic hours toward their audiology degrees.
On June 27, 2022, Mirabella at ASU hosted their first Hearing Clinic for which nearly 50 residents attended during the 3-hour period. Many residents shared that they had never gotten a hearing test done, but suspected that they have been suffering from hearing loss for years. Several even shared that they have been living with tinnitus for years, believing it was a neurological issue and not treatable with hearing solutions.
The ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic is part of the ASU College of Health Solutions. which provide high quality professional audiology and speech services to individuals of all ages with needs in communication and hearing improvement. The Speech and Hearing Clinic provides supervised clinical learning opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and skills in providing advanced and state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic services.
This is just one of the many benefits of being located right on ASU’s campus where residents have convenient access to the wide range of amenities and services that are anchored in one of the top research universities in the country.
